Habitat BW's House Places 2nd in State-Wide Contest

A house built by Bay-Waveland Habitat for Humanity won second place in Mississippi Home Corporation’s “Building a Greener Mississippi” house building competition. The announcement was made at the MHC’s Annual Affordable Housing Conference in Jackson, Mississippi.

The competition was open to builders throughout Mississippi, challenging them to build “affordable green homes across the state.” A total of seven houses were entered in the competition, with builders vying for first, second and third place.

The house, located on Lincoln Drive in Bay St. Louis, was built in late 2009 in partnership with Habitat homeowner, Stacey Loftin and her family. In addition to surpassing the Gold standard for green building set forth by the National Association of Home Builders, the house has also received NAHB’s prestigious Emerald certification. To date, it is the only house in the state of Mississippi to achieve this level.

“We’re excited that we’ve received this award,” said Wendy McDonald, Executive Director of Bay-Waveland Habitat. “It’s confirmation of our mission to rebuild our community with attractive, comfortable, energy efficient, environmentally responsible houses that are also affordable.”

“The competition house gave us an opportunity to test several new green building materials and methods,” said Mark Scott, Bay-Waveland Habitat’s Director of Construction. “The results have been very helpful to us in determining what things are appropriate and affordable for our houses.”

The competition house is representative of Bay-Waveland Habitat’s strong commitment to green building in Hancock County.
